Beach House - Gila

The critically acclaimed Beach House have a new album that came out yesterday. After having a day to soak it in, I am starting to question why they are so effing critically acclaimed! Sure the album is good, listenable, and the vocals are nice. But I would not say this is the best band or album. I think I would agree with Pitchfork in naming Beach House as one of the better bands, but by far not number one. Not even top ten. One of my fav songs off of the album is Gila. The song is pretty slow, and has some really cool vocal backings.

So the best album by far of 2007, combined with one of my fav remix artists and by far my fav rapper equals me splooging my pants. Words can't describe how awesome this is. Taking Radioheads cover of Thom Yorke's Videotape Amplive has created a masterpiece. Amplive didn't stop at just Videotape, he did the whole album, most of which I will post about later. It was surrounded with controversy (mainly from a cease and desist letter), but the good overpowered the evil! (I am cautiously calling Radiohead evil, because they did sort of stick it to the RIAA). Words cannot describe how awesome this is, so just listen....

Each Year -Ra Ra Riot

It's almost summer time here where I am. Currently I am sitting outside, on a beautiful hill, enjoying the bask of what feel s like a 60 degree sunny day! FABULOUS! One of the more promising up and coming bands of the year is Ra Ra Riot. Their album was released last summer, and it totally brings back really great memories for me. Hopefully it will do the same for you. And for all that live in the cold (I used to call MN my home), I hope this song makes you really really sad that you are not working on a tan like myself!

The Raveonettes - Dead Sound

The Raveonettes have been around for ever. While they never really took off in America, they received mild success in Europe. Their soon to be released Lust Lust Lust is good, and pretty fucking catchy. The band sticks to it's roots by using late 50's pop vocal melodies, and lots of guitar. I have been told that the audio engineer for the album made it with the intention of the album to be played really loud. I can totally see that. Dead Sound is just dying to be blasted, with its pop choruses and heavy distortion. I think the band did the right thing with the more home brewed approach to this album, seeing as their last album was a critical flop. I have also included a remix of Dead Sound by Peter Holmstrom and Jeremy Sherrer, which I think is pretty spectacular. The remix cuts back on the heavy distortion, adds a nice electro beat reminiscent of the Postal Service, and increases the length. Dare I say that I like the remix more?

Hot Chip - Made In The Dark

So I am in love with Hot Chip's latest album, Made In The Dark. The whole album grooves. I don't think I gave a single song a rating of less than five! I really enjoy Ready For The Floor. It has a great dancey beat, and I love the electronic blips. I have also annoyed the shit out of what are no longer my friends by doing the Bendable Poseable like a bazillion times. I have only read a few bad reviews of this album, most of which center around that fact that all the songs aren't upbeat. While it is true there are some "ballads", they are great and add a lot to the diversity of Hot Chip's music.

Wild Horses - Covers

So one of my favorite things ever is when a great artist redoes a classic, and it is simply spectacular. The Rolling Stones have had a plethora of spectacular songs, and one of my fav's has got to be Wild Horses. I guess I like surprising chillness that the song can bring, and I am in a sort of late night mood.
Today we have several covers, first of which is by Sheryl Crow. Sheryl decided to go acoustic with just a piano and her beautiful voice. I love the intensity she puts into it. Very nice. Another interesting cover is from the Iron and Wine/Calexico tour. Of course this version is a little bit country (can you say slide guitar?). I also love the use of the vibes! The final cover is by a jazz musician named Tim Ries. He created a whole cd of Stones covers, and he does his best to make them into "modern jazz". I think he has a 50% success rate.

Knife - Grizzly Bear

Okay so I am obsessed with a British show called Skins. Airing on the E4 channel, and not currently available through "normal" means in the US, Skins is the mother fucking best thing to happen to my life in ages.
If Gossip Girl had a baby with a drugged up drunk supermodel, it would look like Skins. Skins centers around the life of some British college students, and their completely awesome life's. Not only is the story great, but the many guest directors do a great job of making my eyes have orgasms. Every shot is beautiful, and well thought out. Did I mention how utterly hot the characters are?
But to top it all off Skins contains some of the best music I have ever heard on a tv show. So I am going to start a Skins music watch, where I will post the best tunes from the show. For the first track we have Knife, by Grizzly Bear. The original track is off of 2006's Yellow House, a must have. The band consists of just four people, and is a mix of electronic and indie rock. Knife is such a starts out with a guitar "hook" that progress throughout the entire song. I really love the vocals, which get their wide range of sounds from all four members' contributions. I have also included a Girl Talk remix, which is of course amazing, and the ever popular CSS cover. Enjoy!
